FUNSALUD awards

2003 History

Since 1992, FUNSALUD has awarded Biennial Prizes to Mexican scientists in recognition of their work and the quality of their research in specific health fields. In 2002 a new prize was added in the field of genomic medicine. The prizes are the following:

• Laboratorios Columbia for Dermatology
• Elías Sourasky for Institutional Health Development
• Grupo Óptico Lux for Diabetes
• Alfonso Robinson Bours for Medical Education
• NADRO for Gastrointestinal Infections
• Silanes-INMEGEN in genomic medicine
• José Santos for Ophthalmology
• Antonio López de Silanes Sr for Promotion of Research Projects for Diabetes
• Matilde M. de Santos for Environmental Health
• Grupo Carso for Organ Transplant

At the beginning of each year contestants are summoned, then juries of specialists in each discipline are formed, with representatives from academies and well-known professional associations; they evaluate each case and select the winners. In a special ceremony, during the Manuel Martínez Baez Conference, the prizes are awarded to the winning projects or individuals. Both Mexican entrepreneurs and FUNSALUD associates sponsor the prizes. Each prize consists of a diploma and a cash incentive. By 2002, forty four research groups had won the prize as well as five personalities from the Mexican health and medical field.
