Center for Social and Economic Health Analysis (CASEsalud)

Since 1989, FUNSALUD has carried out a variety of activities related to the study of health system policies. Since 1993 it has operated several organizational methods that resulted from the original study on Health and the Economy, in order to help define and evaluate options that could eventually lead Mexico’s health system to improve its response to the needs of the population, through strategies that promote equity, quality and efficient services.

In 2001, the Center for Social and Economic Health Analysis (CASEsalud) was established, to promote four research categories that help improve decision-making regarding social welfare policies. These are: i) financial protection; ii) public/private mixture; iii) information for the decision-making process and iv) gender, health and reproductive health. It carries out specific projects in each of these categories, whether by request from a specific agency or by collaborating proactively in its formulation. In this sense, it has participated in projects for the National Council for Science and Technology, the Health Ministry, The Department of Social Development, the Population Council, The World Health Organization, the National Ecology Institute, amongst others.

Furthermore, CASEsalud has established cooperation treaties with prestigious academic institutions, such as Sussex University’s International Center for Development Studies, London University’s School of Tropical and Hygienic Medicine, and Harvard University’s Public Health School.

Throughout the year, it celebrates a permanent seminar where many outstanding national and foreign academics gather, in order to keep the afore-mentioned research categories up-to-date. Moreover, personnel from CASEsalud participate in academic activities within the country and abroad.
