SIDALAC Initiative

In 1996, by request of the World Bank, the Regional Initiative on AIDS for Latin America and the Caribbean, SIDALAC, was established in FUNSALUD, in order to influence the zone with regards to the mobilization of efforts against the AIDS epidemic and other sexually transmitted diseases. The SIDALAC Initiative is affiliated to the Joint United Nations program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

The objective of the SIDALAC Initiative is to develop projects that provide useful information in the strategic planning for the prevention of the disease, as well as to widely disseminate its results. It promotes the development of projects that provide useful information in the decision-making process, the realization of interventions to sensitize decision-makers, and the dissemination of the lessons learned, particularly through a broad publishing program; it also has an electronic communications network through its web page www.sidalac.org.mx and through the Foundation itself.

These past few years it has been working on the economic impact of the pandemic by carrying out several activities:

  • Training of those who participate in AIDS programs throughout the countries in the region.
  • Elaboration of an estimate of financial influxes and expenditures for HIV/AIDS, as well as profiling related programs in the context of Latin American health systems in 16 countries of the region.
